History / Points of Interest

Year Erected: 1996

The C.K. Choi Building officially opened on October 7th, 1996. The building is named for Cheung-Kok Choi in recognition of his donation to the Institute of Asian Research. The building was constructed using many recycled materials and incorporating innovative 'green' technologies such as solar panels, architecture designed to maximize access to natural light, and composting toilets. The building's unique design made it a candidate for the 1996 Energy Users News Efficient Building Award. The C.K. Choi building has also been the recipient of the Architectural Institute of British Columbia's Inaugural Innovation Award in 1998, the 1996 Building Owners and Managers Association's Earth Award, and the Progressive Award for Green Architecture in 1996.
